When you quickly skim read the questions and possible answers in PET Reading Part 3, you will understand the structure of the article. This will help you scan for answers to the questions later because you will know how to navigate the text.

step one: read the questions & answers

Quickly read the questions & answers and underline key words. (1 minute max).

As you underline, begin to think about the text.

You do this very quickly!

You want to form a very general idea about what the text might be about.

step two: predict the content!

Use the underlined keywords to make two or three general sentences in your mind about what you think the article is about. You will think (don't write) something like this:

You are now ready to skim read the text. Read the title and then the first and last sentence of each paragraph; rapidly skim over everything else. Your aim is to understand the structure of the article, which will help you find the answers later. Remember, you won’t need to read or understand every word.

why this exercise is useful
