PET Reading Part 6
In Part 6 of the PET Reading Exam, you’ll see a short text of around 80–100 words. Six words are missing from this text, and you’ll need to fill in each gap with a single, appropriate word—no choices are provided. This means you’ll rely on your own knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and context. Generally, the words you’ll need to add are simple but essential, like articles, prepositions, pronouns, or verbs.

how much time for part 6?
Aim to spend about 6–8 minutes on this section. You’ll want to focus carefully but not get stuck on any one gap for too long. A balanced pace is important since all six gaps count toward your score, and each word is crucial to the passage’s meaning.
common challenges and how to overcome them
- Understanding grammar and sentence structure
One common challenge is identifying the correct grammatical form or structure that completes a sentence naturally. For instance, you may be filling in missing articles (like the or a) or auxiliary verbs (like is or has). Practising sentence-completion exercises and looking for patterns in similar sentences can really help you here. - Inserting the correct word
The words you’ll need are usually everyday, functional words that hold sentences together. Words like and, in or with might seem small, but they make a big difference. Going over vocabulary lists and practice sentences on myenglishexams can give you the extra confidence to choose words that feel natural. - Making sense of context
It’s always easier to insert the correct word when you understand the text’s overall meaning. Start by reading through the entire passage once so you get the full context. This will help you see how each sentence connects, making it easier to insert the correct words in each gap.
